Mary Robinson invited to speak to Environment Committee – Humphreys

I welcome the decision today, at the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht, to extend an invitation to the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice (MRFCJ) group to appear at a meeting.

The Committee has been discussing the interim report from the National Economic and Social Council; ‘Towards a New National Climate Policy’, that deals solely with climate change policy as it relates to Irish socio-economic needs, and current obligations under international and European Union agreements.

I am delighted that the Chairperson, Michael McCarthy T.D., has accepted my suggestion to invite the former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson, to the Committee to address the humanitarian consequence of failing to address the climate change crises in a global context.
